I used to do book reviews but never manga reviews? So this time around, it'll be a manga review and I choose MAGI! It's too awesome. So awesome I ignored the fact I had upcoming exams to read 100 chapters of this babeh (but i did study. I'm not totally crazy).
'Welcome to the world of magic and.... a lil about life as well.'
Well the one thing I liked about this manga is the authors use of classic characters such as Ali Baba, Sinbad and Aladdin. The story is kind of like a typical shounen story. The main character would be Aladdin who has the power of a Magi - able to use magic, respected by jinns and destined to select the king of the world apparently.
In the story, people who go into dungeons (as a sort of trial) either never get out or come out with a jinn and treasures. Sinbad's character was that of a king who conquered several dungeons by himself.
Aladdin's selected king was Ali Baba. I love Ali Baba's character. Unsure about himself, not confident with himself but always trying his best to make the best of situations and even with his own problems never stop helping others. Some parts you'd think Ali Baba is a coward and then there are times when he's just so cool and brave. Kind of like Usopp's character from OnePiece (minus all the comedy).
The story does not seem to appear too complicated and does not have a complex storyline. It's a fun and simple manga about magic, adventures, and friendship. Learning about the characters and following their progress makes you love them all the more. The story also includes a lil bit about slavery, politics and monarchy (albeit very little).
I won't recommend mystery lovers to read this manga. It a manga for fantasy lovers like me i guess.
Update: I'm sad to say I have dropped reading this manga due to the fact that the storyline just warped out of proportions. It went from a simple shounen-based story to a religion-fantasy-weird-what-am-i-reading manga. I won't totally call it bull.... who am I kidding, it really was that bad (at least for me).
Spoilers:
There was a huge as war where all the household vessels and the selected king fought against Al-tharmen. The story progressed to how Ali baba lost his country and how he is faced with the consequence of his previous decision to make his country a democratic country. Then it suddenly began to revolve around aladdin and he began explaining about how the world was previous ruled by weird creatures who ate humans. Then there was parts regarding Solomon's wisdom and how all religion came from one source. I stopped reading when I saw too many Iluminati signs. hahaha. Well, one would say it might be a typical Muslim phobia but I'm trying to be partial here as a fan of manga. The progress of the story isn't what I'd call to my taste and hence I dropped it. If the author wanted to bring up religion he should have a more clever way of putting it. I feel it was all kind of rushed and kind of documentary the way Aladdin explained it. Documentary and manga do not match in my opinion. However, if folks still wish to give it a go I will not stop you.
